How much hydrolyzed collagen to take per day: the right dose for your age and goal
Search for "hydrolyzed collagen" on Google and you will find thousands of results that tell you what it is and what it's for. Very few tell you precisely how much hydrolyzed collagen to take per day, when to take it and whether that dose changes according to your age or your goal.
The short answer: between 5 and 10 grams a day for skin, and around 10 grams for joints, in formats that are ingested. But there is a nuance that decides the result and that almost no article mentions: the dose on the container is not the dose that reaches your tissues. That depends on the absorption route, and there the difference is more than threefold.
Taking less than necessary means not seeing results and concluding that collagen "doesn't work". Taking more does not speed anything up, but it inflates the monthly spend. And taking the right dose in the wrong format wastes most of what you paid for. If you're not clear on which format is for you, our collagen comparison tool settles it in two questions.
How much hydrolyzed collagen to take per day: the basics
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body: it represents approximately 30% of all body protein and is present in skin, bones, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and blood vessels.
During the first 20 years of life the body produces it in abundance. From the age of 25, that production decreases gradually and progressively.

The cumulative effect is what shows: skin that loses firmness, stiffer joints, more fragile hair, slower physical recovery. In women, the drop in estrogens during the first years of menopause speeds up the process markedly.
Supplementation aims to make up for that gap. For it to work, the dose must be enough for the peptides to reach the tissues where they are needed. According to the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), the evidence on oral hydrolyzed collagen is more solid for skin and joints than for other uses.
Why the hydrolyzed form is absorbed better than other forms
The collagen in foods —bone broth, gelatin— has molecules that are too large for the intestine to absorb efficiently.
The hydrolyzed form goes through enzymatic hydrolysis, which breaks those molecules into peptides of between 2,000 and 5,000 daltons, directly absorbable. Once in circulation, those peptides stimulate the fibroblasts to produce new collagen. They do not "replace" collagen: they activate your own production. The detail is in are there collagens similar to the hydrolyzed one?
The most underestimated factor: the absorption route
Before talking about grams it's worth understanding this, because it changes the rest of the maths.
A collagen that is swallowed —capsule or powder— has to cross the stomach, the intestine and the intestinal wall before reaching the bloodstream. Most of it is lost on that journey: the absorption of the oral route in a capsule is around 25%.
The sublingual route —under the tongue, straight into circulation, without going through digestion— reaches 80%.
It's more than three times what your body uses from the same amount. That is why the figures in grams in this article have to be read with context: 10 grams of powder at 25% are not equivalent to 10 grams by a route that delivers 80%. The full comparison is in sublingual collagen vs capsule vs powder.

How long it takes to be noticeable
Here it's worth being precise, because very different timeframes circulate and almost nobody explains why.
The Everyday Lab's timeframe is 6 weeks of consistent use by the sublingual route. Six weeks is approximately how long it takes the skin to complete a renewal cycle: that is the real biological frame and we say it straight.
The clinical studies you'll see cited further down worked with longer timeframes —8, 12 or even 24 weeks— and there is a concrete reason: they were done with oral collagen in powder or capsule form, with absorption close to 25%. Reaching a useful concentration in the blood by that route simply takes more time.
So when a timeframe of 8 or 12 weeks appears in this article, it refers to the protocol of the cited study by the oral route, not to our product's timeframe.
The clinical dose: what the studies say
All the figures in this section correspond to oral route protocols.
For the skin
The most robust studies worked with 5 to 10 grams a day. A double-blind trial with 60 women between 35 and 70 years old showed improvements in firmness and elasticity after 8 weeks with 5 grams a day of marine peptides.
Range in studies: 5–10 g/day by the oral route.
For joints
The protocols use doses of 10 grams a day. The meta-analysis by Garcia-Coronado et al. (2019), published in BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, found significant improvements in osteoarthritis symptoms with a good safety profile.
For undenatured type II collagen (UC-II), which acts through a different immunological mechanism, the effective doses are much lower: around 40 mg a day.
Range in studies: 10 g/day by the oral route.
For athletic performance and tendons
Some protocols go up to 15 grams a day for connective tissue recovery. In athletes, taking it 30–60 minutes before training together with vitamin C may favor synthesis in the tissues under load.
Range in studies: 10–15 g/day by the oral route.
For hair and nails
The evidence is less specific, but the skin studies show collateral improvements with the same doses. Type I is the most relevant. More detail in benefits of collagen for hair.
Range in studies: 5–10 g/day by the oral route.
Dose according to your age
20 to 29 years old
Production is close to its peak and the body still compensates with good nutrition. There is no strong reason to supplement. Those with high sun exposure, who smoke or who follow low-protein diets may consider low preventive doses.
Indicative: 2.5–5 g/day, optional.
30 to 39 years old
The first expression lines appear and, in active people, the first joint discomfort. It is the ideal decade to establish the habit.
Indicative: 5–10 g/day. Go up to 10 g if the goal is joints.
40 to 49 years old
The loss speeds up and supplementation stops being preventive. It's worth looking for formulas that include vitamin C.
Indicative: 10 g/day as a base.
50 years old and up
Besides the skin, joint mobility and bone health become priorities. In women, the hormonal drop of menopause amplifies the loss —and not only in the skin: also in the intimate mucosa. There the vaginal route, with 99% absorption, is the one that corresponds; we cover it in collagen for vaginal dryness in menopause.
Indicative: 10–15 g/day. Consult your doctor about integration with other protocols; the official site of the Ministry of Health offers general guidance on the climacteric.
Dose according to your goal
| Goal | Type | Daily dose (oral route) | Timeframe in studies |
| Skin elasticity and firmness | Type I (or I+III) | 5–10 g | 8 weeks |
| Wrinkle reduction | Type I | 5–10 g | 8–12 weeks |
| Deep hydration | Type I + hyaluronic acid | 5–10 g | 8 weeks |
| General joint health | Hydrolyzed type I/III | 10 g | 12 weeks |
| Joint discomfort / osteoarthritis | Type II UC-II | 40 mg | 12–24 weeks |
| Bone health | Type I/III | 10 g | 12 weeks or more |
| Athletic recovery | Type I/III | 10–15 g | 8–12 weeks |
| Hair and nails | Type I | 5–10 g | 8–12 weeks |
Reminder: these timeframes are from oral route protocols with absorption close to 25%. By the sublingual route, with 80%, the timeframe we work with is 6 weeks.
When to take it
The evidence does not conclusively establish a superior hour. There are practical considerations:
- On an empty stomach: the peptides do not compete with other nutrients in digestion. Useful above all in formats that are ingested.
- Before sleeping: it aligns availability with the night-time repair window. A good option for anyone who forgets the morning dose.
- Before training: 30–60 minutes before, with vitamin C, for connective tissue goals.
What really decides it: more than the hour, consistency. A collagen taken at 2 in the afternoon every day beats one taken "sometimes". We develop this in how to take collagen consistently.
The real problem with powder: it's not the formula, it's the friction
Collagen powder is popular in Mexico for good reasons: it is versatile and easy to find. It has two limits.
The first is absorption: the complete digestive journey leaves close to 25% available. The second is more prosaic and probably more decisive: it requires a shaker, water, time and remembering. An inconvenient format gets abandoned, and an abandoned supplement has 0% efficacy no matter its formula.
The sublingual route solves both things at once: 80% absorption and zero preparation. It is taken in seconds, anywhere. It is the principle The Liquid Collagen Boost is made with.
It is also worth checking that the brand complies with current regulations. The Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) has published quality studies on collagens sold in Mexico, finding labeling irregularities in several brands.
What to combine it with
- Vitamin C: an indispensable cofactor in the synthesis of procollagen. Without it, the body does not complete the process no matter how many peptides it receives.
- Hyaluronic acid: it works synergistically in deep hydration.
- Zinc and magnesium: cofactors of protein synthesis and recovery.
And what interferes: sun without protection, tobacco, excess sugar and chronic stress actively degrade collagen. It is detailed in what destroys collagen.
The five most common mistakes
- An insufficient dose. Many products come with servings of 2–3 grams, below the useful threshold. Check the grams of peptides per serving, not the weight of the sachet.
- Giving up too soon. Collagen is not ibuprofen. Dropping it at three weeks is the most frequent mistake of all.
- Not checking the type. Type I is for skin, hair and nails; type II is specific to cartilage.
- Confusing grams of product with grams of collagen. A 20-gram sachet can contain sugars and flavorings that inflate the weight. It is exactly what Profeco has pointed out in its Revista del Consumidor.
- Ignoring the format. The right dose by a route that wastes three quarters is still a wasted dose.
What no dose achieves
- It does not cure, treat or prevent diseases. It is a food supplement.
- Going over 15 g/day does not speed up results and may cause digestive discomfort.
- It does not make up for sun without protection, tobacco or a protein deficit.
- The benefits are sustained as long as the consumption is sustained.
Frequently asked questions
How much hydrolyzed collagen should you take per day?
Between 5 and 10 grams a day for skin and around 10 grams for joints, in formats that are ingested. The route matters just as much: the sublingual one delivers 80% versus the 25% of a capsule.
How long until results are seen?
By the sublingual route, the timeframe is about 6 weeks of consistent use, which is how long a renewal cycle of the skin takes. The studies with oral collagen in powder form used 8 to 12 weeks, because their absorption is close to 25%.
Can I take more than 15 grams to see results faster?
There is no evidence that going over 15 grams speeds anything up, and very high doses may cause digestive discomfort. More detail in is collagen in excess bad?
Does hydrolyzed collagen have contraindications?
It has a very good safety profile. Anyone allergic to fish should avoid marine collagen, and anyone with kidney failure should consult their doctor, since collagen adds to the total protein load. We cover it in collagen and kidney failure.
Is collagen fattening?
No. It provides approximately 35–40 calories per 10 grams in its pure form and is not associated with weight gain.
The Everyday Lab's collagen
The Liquid Collagen Boost — sublingual collagen
Each 1.5 mL serving (30 drops) provides 150 mg of hydrolyzed collagen: it is hydrolyzed into small peptides and is taken by the sublingual route, so it passes into the blood without crossing digestion. That combination is the reason for its 80% absorption versus the 25% of a capsule, because it does not go through the digestive system. No shaker, no powders, nothing to mix: it is taken in seconds, which is what makes consistency possible. Ingredients declared with amounts, manufactured with raw material from an FDA-registered establishment (establishment registration, not product approval), with FSSC 22000 certification and COFEPRIS classification letters (oficios de clasificación).
