Which wellness patch should you choose in Mexico?
The short answer: there is no one wellness patch that works for everybody. There is a patch for each need, and choosing well comes down to three questions: which ingredient it carries, how much of that ingredient really reaches your body, and whether it has COFEPRIS classification letters (oficios de clasificación). Here we tell you how to choose a wellness patch without being taken for a ride — and also when a patch is not what you need.
What is a wellness patch and how does it work?
It is an adhesive that releases its active ingredients through the skin, little by little, without passing through the digestive system. And that is where the whole difference lies.
When you swallow a capsule, the active has to survive stomach acid and the first pass through the liver. What finally ends up available to your body is around 25%: three quarters are lost along the way. A supplementation patch delivers up to 80% — more than three times what you get out of a pill, and without loading your digestion.
That is the real reason the format exists. It is not a trend: it is absorption arithmetic. The complete breakdown, with the evidence behind it, is in Science and absorption, in Do wellness patches work? and in the direct comparison patch or pill: which one is absorbed better?.
Before comparing brands: not all patches are the same
This is the most expensive confusion in the Mexican market. Under the word “patch” three categories coexist that have nothing to do with each other:
- Pharmacological: they carry a drug (nicotine, hormones, painkillers). They are medication, many require a prescription and they are not supplements.
- Supplementation: they carry vitamins, minerals or compounds such as melatonin. Here the figure of 80% absorption does apply.
- Physical: they act by temperature, they do not deliver any substance to the body. A cooling or a heating patch works by evaporation or by local heat. Talking about “absorption” with these makes no sense.
If a brand sells you a physical patch while boasting absorption percentages, you already know it is improvising. We develop the complete distinction in Patches on the skin: which are pharmacological and which are not.
What should I check before buying a wellness patch?
Three things, no beating around the bush.
1. Declared ingredients with amounts. If the label says “vitamin complex” and does not tell you how much of each thing, you cannot evaluate anything. Opacity almost always hides symbolic doses.
2. Cofepris classification. In Mexico it is the minimum sign that the product complies. It is not a seal of effectiveness, but its absence is an alarm. It is also worth checking where it is manufactured: The Everyday Lab patches use raw material from a plant registered with the FDA (establishment registration, not product approval) and hold FSSC 22000 certification.
3. That it solves YOUR specific need. Sleep, energy, cramps, motion sickness or a hangover. A patch that promises “everything” rarely does “something” well. Specificity is an advantage, not a limitation.
As an extra: that it is water resistant and that the packaging says how many hours it stays stuck. If it does not say, it is because they did not measure it.
What wellness patches are there and what is each one for?
The Everyday Lab built its line by need, not by trend. One product, one problem:
- Daily energy and immunity: The Multi-Vitamin Patch brings together 11 vitamins in a single patch. It is the most versatile one to start with.
- Sleep: the sleep patch with melatonin, to fall asleep without adding another pill to the nightstand. If you want to know what the evidence says before buying it, we answer that in does the sleep patch with melatonin work?. And if you prefer to avoid melatonin, there is the melatonin-free version.
- Menstrual cramps: the heating patch gives warmth for up to 5 hours, without medication and discreet under clothing. It is a physical patch: it relieves by temperature, not by absorption.
- Motion sickness while traveling: the anti-motion sickness patch is placed behind the ear and does not cause drowsiness.
- The day after: the hangover patch provides B complex and antioxidants to cushion what alcohol takes from you.
You can see them all together in Patches for the body. And if you travel often, the travel size formats are the cheapest way to try one before committing to a full box.
Do wellness patches really work?
Yes, with nuances — and the nuance matters more than the yes. Effectiveness depends on the ingredient: melatonin and several fat-soluble compounds cross the skin well; some water-soluble vitamins are harder to transport, and that is why the formulation weighs as much as the concept.
We break it down with data in Are wellness patches marketing or science?.
And the honest part: a patch is a support, not a substitute for sleeping well, eating well and moving. Nor does it work magic in a week. What it does do — and this is what almost nobody says — is make consistency easy. A format that does not cost you effort is sustained; an uncomfortable one is abandoned in three days. Consistency is what produces results, and that is why the format matters as much as the formula. We deal with it in Wellness routine and consistency.
When should you NOT use a wellness patch?
Here we are not going to sell it to you by force. Consult your doctor first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have a diagnosed medical condition, if you take medications that could interact, or if what you are looking for is to treat an illness — for that a supplement is not the tool.
Also do not stick it on irritated, wounded or sunburned skin. And if you get redness or persistent itching, remove it. Honesty is also a form of care.
So, which one do you recommend?
The one that solves what you need today. Restless nights? The sleep one. Does your energy drop mid-afternoon? The multivitamin. Cramps? The heating one. A long trip? The anti-motion sickness one.
Start with your loudest need, give it six weeks of consistency and evaluate from there. It is more useful than buying five different patches on the same day and not knowing which one worked for you.
Start with the most versatile one
The Multi-Vitamin Patch — 11 vitamins in a single patch, up to 80% absorption versus 25% for a capsule. No pills, no stomach discomfort, no remembering the glass of water.
